David Savage was the third recipient of hand transplant in the US. He lost his right dominant hand in industrial press accident in 1973.
He was using a cable hook prosthesis which he wore full time at work and part time at home. His main goal in undergoing a hand transplant procedure was to be able to throw a football with his 10-year-old son.
He underwent a hand transplant surgery on November 2006.
In the following years after the transplant he have some episodes of rejection. He lost the fingernails of the transplanted hand.
At year eight post transplant doctors found a skin lesión on his back and was diagnosed with skin cancer. He was treated, but the cancer persist. He underwent a radiation treatment. He was hospitalized in his residential state and was investigated for any other source for the cancer. No other source was found. He passed away on December 3, 2018 as secondary to complications of cancer.
