Bucharest nightclub fire leaves 27 dead, more then 150 injured on Halloween

Halloween horror: Majority of the victims were cooked alive near the exit

Twenty-seven people - mostly teenagers and young people - have been killed after fire broke out at a nightclub in Bucharest.


The blaze took hold at the Colectiv club on Friday night, causing a stampede for the exit.


Emergency response chief Raed Arafat said 155 people were being treated in hospitals in the Romanian capital.


The fire is believed to have been caused by fireworks that were let off inside the club.

Fire quickly spread form a pillar to the ceiling


Witnesses said a spark on the stage ignited some of the polystyrene decor. A pillar and the club's ceiling caught fire and there was an explosion and heavy smoke, they added.


"People were fainting, they were fainting from the smoke. It was total chaos, people were trampling on each other," Victor Ionescu, who was at the club, told local TV station Antena 3.


Up to 400 people may have been inside the club, which was hosting a free rock concert.

A common denominator in these nightclub fires is the use of pyrotechnics. There was a similar fire at the Station nightclub in Rhode Island, US that killed 100 people. It, too was the result of pyrotechnics. If you are EVER at ANY bar that is using pyrotechnics....GET THE FUCK OUT! You can actually google deaths from bars where huge loss of life has resulted from pyrotechnics. A bar in Perm, Russia. Kiss nightclub in Brazil (or Argentina). Too many to list.

Indoor pyrotechnics, never a good idea. Recalls the Station nightclub fire of more than 10 years ago, as mentioned earlier. A video of this exists and it is absolutely horrific.

I love fiery doom, but in the context of an execution or sacrifice, including the Buddhist self-immolations. These poor souls were mostly trampled and left on the floor to die from the heat and fumes. A pretty horrible way to end a Halloween Party. The worse fate is to be left a burn cripple, you would be much better off to die in the flames!

We complain about the nanny state and the over emphasis on health and safety legislation prohibiting us doing things we want? And then a tragedy like this happens justifying the involvement of the inspectorate. Because whatever we may think of them there is no way they would have allowed fireworks in a crowded nightclub.
