Autopsy in Art

Ever since Leonardo da Vinci actually dug up corpses to study their anatomy (he was gay for sure, but it's not widely accepted (yet?) he was also a necro), there has been an interest in scenes like these. Rembrandt (my fellow countryman and leading painter of the 17th century) only followed in a well-established tradition.

I wonder why there was such a widespread interest in anatomical dissection then. Hidden sexual desires allowed an outlet? Genuine curiosity for knowledge above silly religious claptrap? I'd love to hear more about this.
