He was a sharp dresser. It looks like he put the gun barrel in his ear. It's so hard to know where exactly to place the bullet for optimal results. I've heard that shooting oneself in the temple can result in blindness rather than death, so I suppose the mouth (another traditional choice) is the better bet. If there were places for sad people to go for a lethal injection, it wouldn't even be an issue.
