Agustin Gomez, an 18 year-old indigenous farmer set himself on fire outside the local congress of the southern Mexican state of Chiapas.
He was part of a protest demanding that his uncle Florentino Gomez, jailed since May 1 for his activism as head of the Ricardo Flores Magon Front but charged with cow stealing, be released.
In the afternoon the young man poured gasoline on himself, and asked one of his friends to use a lighter on him, “Set me on fire, for the release of my uncle, Florentino!” he was reported to have said.
With his chest on fire, the young farmer rolled around and screamed for a while, and friends cried. A couple of minutes later, relatives and rescuers toppled him over and put the fire out with blankets, and took him to the hospital later. Relatives say the farmer is in critical “life or death” condition at Tuxtla’s regional hospital.
Later the government freed Florentino Gomez, according to La Jornada. The Mexican paper reported that his current whereabouts are unknown, but that the protesters have withdrawn.
