Van Krapivin was only 14 when he was brutally beaten by his drunk neighbor Roman Pronin on May 1, 2017.
Pronin struck the kid on the head with a dumbbell as the boy tried to save his own mother Natalia from who suffered 27 stab wounds by Roman but survived.
The boy was rushed to hospital where he underwent emergency surgery to remove part of his skull.
Van slipped into coma several times, lost his ability to speak and didn't even react when friends came to see him.
He stayed in hospital but didn't improve much and passed away on December 4, 2018.
Investigation later concluded the mother of the boy was an alcoholic and had a sexual relationship with her son's killer.
By special decree of the President of Russia Vladimir Putin the boy was posthumously awarded the Order of Courage of the Russian Federation for his courage and decisiveness shown in saving people in extreme conditions.
