Former Uruguayan soccer player Franco Acosta, who played for Villarreal and Racing Santander, was found lifeless this Monday, after he disappeared on Saturday while trying to swim across, with his brother, Arroyo Pando, in the department of Canelones, in the south of his country. It was precisely his brother who raised the alarm and after two days of searching, the tragic outcome was confirmed this afternoon.

According to sources from the National Navy confirmed to Efe, the body of the young athlete was found in practically the same place where it had been last seen. Acosta, 25, had been wanted by maritime authorities since Saturday.

Acosta was on an outing with his family at the time, celebrating his 25th birthday, and tried to swim across the Pando river. He was a Uruguay youth international striker.

The forward moved to Spain when Villarreal’s B team signed him from Fénix in Uruguay in January 2015 on a five and a half year deal, however, he never really settled in at the Primera club or fulfilled his early promise, and was loaned to Racing Santander in 2018. He was then loaned to Uruguayan side Plaza Colonia. Villarreal released him at the start of 2020, before he went on to sign for Atenas.
