Good afternoon.

A powerful 7.8 earthquake struck south-eastern Turkey early this morning near the Syrian border, killing thousands of people as they slept and trapping many others.

The US Geological Survey said the 7.8 magnitude tremor struck at 04:17 local time (01:17 GMT) at a depth of 17.9km (11 miles) near the city of Gaziantep.
Hours later, a second quake, which had a magnitude of 7.5, hit the Elbistan district of Kahramanmaras province.
So far, more than 1,000 people have died in Turkey and 780 in Syria.

Seismologists said the first quake was one of the largest ever recorded in Turkey.

Many thousands of people were injured - with at least 5,385 people hurt in Turkey and 2,000 in Syria.

Many of the victims are in war-torn northern Syria, where millions of refugees live in camps on both sides of the Syria-Turkey border. There have been dozens of fatalities reported in rebel-held areas.

Many buildings have collapsed and rescue teams have been deployed to search for survivors under huge piles of rubble in freezing and snowy conditions.

Earthquake Death Toll Surpasses 12,000

Good evening.

The death toll from the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria today surpassed 12, 000 and may climb even further in the coming days.

CNN Turk posted a drone video Pazarcık, a town north of the epicentre.

Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said at least 20,213 people were killed and 80,052 injured in the earthquake that struck 10 provinces in Turkey this week, according to Turkey's state media Anadolu.

He said citizens rescued from the wreckage have been transferred to provinces outside of earthquake-struck regions.

Digital photos of those whose identities are unknown are being uploaded to "special software for matching," Koca said.

"I hope that we will reach the identity information of most of the people," he added.

The total death toll in Turkey and Syria surpassed 22,000 on Friday.

Three USGS seismic installations, two at Antakya and one at Hassa, recorded extreme ground accelerations and velocities.

Hassa recorded 0.9082 g in ground acceleration (pga) and 215.34 cm/s (84.78 in/s) in ground velocity. The station data corresponded to a Modified Mercalli intensity of X (Extreme). The peak ground acceleration was 2.14 g recorded by a station at Pazarcık. o_O

The maximum Modified Mercalli intensities for the Mw  7.8 and 7.7 earthquakes were estimated at XI and X, respectively.

On the Modified Mercalli intensity scale XI means:

Few, if any, (masonry) structures remain standing. Bridges are destroyed. Broad fissures erupt in the ground. Underground pipelines are rendered completely out of service. Earth slumps and land slips in soft ground. Rails are bent greatly.
