The details of the tragedy that occurred in Agios Nikolaos, Crete on Sunday night when 33-year-old Manolis was fatally injured by a naval flare are shocking.
According to information from Creta24, everything happened while the unfortunate 33-year-old was on the pedestrian street of October 28 with seven of his friends and his partner. With two of them, his peers, with whom he had even been together since school, they began to take turns setting off naval flares.
According to the testimonies of people who were on the pedestrian street, the young people had already set off several, when the 33-year-old Manolis tried to "light" another one, but without succeeding. According to witnesses, it was then that he placed the flare on his stomach in an attempt to see what was happening. The dangerous explosive detonated, the deafening noise being heard quite a distance away.
It is characteristic that some of his friends, who were next to him at the time of the explosion, initially thought that they had been hit themselves. In seconds they realized that the young man was bleeding. They called for help.
The scenes that followed were tragic with his partner and another girl in the group running to see what had happened. "I saw a child sitting on a bench bleeding profusely. The flare had exploded in his abdomen, he had a large open wound and it hurt. Manolis was conscious, he was talking but he had lost a lot of blood... the ambulance did not take long to arrive and took him immediately. A little later, we learned that the doctors did not manage to keep him alive and he died ... things were difficult" added the president of the pharmaceutical association of Lasithi, Michalis Plakogiannakis, who happened to be nearby on the fateful night and ran to offer first aid aids
According to information, parts of the flare were stuck in the abdomen of the 33-year-old. The ambulance arrived a few minutes after the explosion, Manolis was taken to the hospital, where unfortunately he did not manage to survive.
