The 44-year-old cyclist was hit on the Costa del Sol’s A-7 motorway near Estepona at around 6.50am on Sunday morning with reports stating the driver hit the dad-of-one side on whilst he was training.
Zumaquero was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics on the AP-7 towards Cadiz.
It sparked a national manhunt with the mayor of the nearby town of Ojen, whom Zumaquero had strong links to, stating: It is a sad day for Ojén and for sport. They have run over our friend Mario Zumaquero and they have fled. Mario has died. I hope they [the police] find the culprit.”
After a mass influx of sharing with calls for witnesses and the whereabouts of the culprit, he was arrested earlier today in Marbella according to Mijas Police.
Reports even suggest witnesses said the driver had roamed around the area near the crash with bicycle imbedded in the windscreen of the car.
The police are yet to give a statement about the arrest.
The Marbella Sports delegation have conveyed their condolences to the family of Zumaquero, and assured them that they will ‘continue to demand greater safety for cyclists.’
Mario Zumaquero was a popular member of the Marbella area often seen attending Club de Escalada de Marbella and the Puro Crossfit Gym.
