More than 755,000 homes and businesses across the USA were without power Christmas Eve afternoon, thanks to an Arctic blast and winter storm that tore down power lines with destructive winds and heavy snow and dipped temperatures dangerously low – conditions killing at least 28 people.

As bone-chilling air continues to grip the US this holiday weekend, the storm still is pummeling parts of the Upper Midwest and interior Northeast with heavy snow and blizzard conditions.

The number of victims has risen to over 50 and is expected to claim more lives after trapping some residents inside houses and knocking out power to tens of thousands of homes and businesses.

The owner of a small family-run shop in East Buffalo said looters broke into his general store on Christmas Day.

"They took everything. People took toys, electronics and speakers," he said.

He estimated up to $50,000 (£41,000) worth of equipment was stolen. He said he called the police, "but they told me they were too busy rescuing the elderly".

The video compilation above does include aftermath of the storm and evidence of looting of stores in Buffalo.
