Singer-songwriter Jackson Browne said Wednesday that his son Ethan, a model, actor and musician, has died.

A Facebook post from the “Running on Empty” singer’s official account noted that Ethan had died Tuesday morning. He was 52. A cause of death is not known.

Ethan had a role in the 2004 Kate Hudson film Raising Helen, and was also a model who appeared in campaigns for designers like Isaac Mizrahi, according to producer Mark Ronson’s memoir Night People.

In the book, Ronson recalled befriending Ethan, who at the time was roommates in New York City with Simon Rex. Ronson described Ethan as “the real deal — with an angular face and soulful gaze that seemed to reveal his deepest truths, even from a glossy page.”

He also wrote that Ethan had the “sharp cheekbones” of his late mother, and the “soulful eyes” of his dad. Ethan was also the founder of Spinside Records, an imprint on Browne's independent label Inside Recordings.

Ethan reportedly modeled for designers including Isaac Mizrahi. He also had roles in the 1995 Angelina Jolie-Jonny Lee Miller film Hackers, the 2004 Kate Hudson movie Raising Helen and the TV series Birds of Prey.

Ethan also followed his dad into music. He was part of the duo Alain Zane with Cat Colbert, whose father Charles Colbert played bass for Harry Belafonte and others. The duo released their debut album, Right Before Your Eyes, in 2022.

Born on Nov. 2, 1973, Ethan was the son of Jackson and model Phyllis Major.

In 1974, when he was only six months old, Ethan appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine with his father.

Jackson and Major were married for four months, from December 1975 until March 1976, when she died by suicide. Ethan was only 2 at the time.

It’s the other Ethan Browne who died overdose.

Ethan Zane Browne

He is alive and well.

Thanks I like him more too very handsome.

So I asked AI and Ethan Zane Browne (1973–2025) passed away on November 25, 2025, at the age of 52. In early 2026, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner ruled his death an accident caused by the combined effects of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and lidocaine.

The New Zealand Actor is currently 34 years old and alive and well.

It's curious because in November, when I posted the thread, all the media outlets were saying the dead man was the other one. Even his Wikipedia page said so (that's why I also included the link).

They've probably realized the confusion and all those news stories disappeared (you know how news outlets copy each other), but my post is still there. What's more, many of those photos came from various news articles.

It's also curious that the undead actor's last post was in October, a month before the other one died.

Well, just Coincidences.
If necessary, I'll delete the post. Or I'll edit it with the photos of the correct one.

I think if kt1980 doesn't say anything, I won't even notice the mistake.

I was able to confirm with AI that when Ethan Zane Browne (1973–2025) died, several media outlets and social media posts mistakenly used photos of a the living New Zealand actor because of the similar name.

The New Zealand actor (who is alive and not connected to the adult film industry) was
briefly misidentified because search engines and stock image libraries pulled his professional headshots with high priority.

Key Details of the Mix-up:

  • The Deceased: Ethan Zane Browne (1973–2025) was an American actor, model, and musician. He appeared in films like Raising Helen and Hackers. He died at age 52 due to what was later confirmed as an accidental overdose of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and lidocaine.
  • The Alive Actor: Ethan Browne is a New Zealand-born actor who has starred in the Australian soap Home and Away since 2020. He is very much alive and continues to appear on the show.
  • The Error: Due to the identical names, some news reports used "file photos" or Getty images of the Home and Away star to accompany the announcement of Jackson Browne’s son’s death. This caused temporary panic among soap opera fans who believed the Tane Parata actor had died.

Consequences of the Error:

  • Social Media Confusion: Fans of Home and Away took to platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram to clarify that the actor was alive, prompting Wikipedia editors to add a "Not to be confused with..." hatnote to the actor's page to prevent further misinformation.
  • Corrections: Most major outlets that made the error, including some regional New Zealand news sites, quickly swapped the photos for correct images of Ethan Zane Browne with his father after being alerted by readers.
