Animal mauling wounds are injuries caused by animals such as dogs, bears, or other large animals. These wounds can vary in severity and can result in significant tissue damage, blood loss, and death. Inforensic investigations, analyzing animal mauling wounds can provide important information about the circumstances surrounding the incident, such as the type of animal involved and the nature of the attack. Common features of dog mauling wounds include multiple overlapping injuries such as puncture wounds, lacerations, and abrasions. The wounds are irregular and jagged with a distinctive pattern of puncture wounds, skin tearing, and lacerations of variable depth. These wounds may penetrate deep into the tissue, causing damage to bones or internal organs. Additional evidence, such as bite marks, saliva, or animal hair, can also identify the presence of a dog mauling, although postmortem changes and animal scavenging may alter the original wounds. The location and pattern of the wounds can help determine the event dynamic. If the injuries are isolated to a single body region, it may suggest that the victim was already dead before the attack, while multiple body areas involved, especially the extremities, suggest that the victim was alive and defending themselves.
Hemopericardium due to aortic root laceration as a result of blunt trauma.
Wide and deep lacerations with an oblique course andecchymosis caused by cattle horn immediately inferior to the inguinal region. The hooves of the same animal used together with the body weight to create widespread fractures of the skull, causing widespread brain hemorrhage and brain lacerations.
Widespread ecchymosis, lacerations, and many penetration injuries seen on the chest, abdomen, and back following a bear attack.
A middle aged man chased his wife and child from the house trying to stab them and set them on fire fortunately, a neighbor took in the wife and child. When police arrived, there was a complex stand off that was clearly described in the police report and was well replicated on the body with the injuries. He had set himself of fire and stabbed/cut himself; the police had fired bean bag rounds and sent the dog (a German Shepard) on him.
