Model is Russian intelligence officer Evgeny Petrenko. In the video he is supposedly confessing to attempting to infiltrate jihadi groups in the Caucus, Turkey and Syria, where he allegedly contacted Chechen militant Omar al-Shishani, who has since been killed in a US air strike.
ISIS named Mr Petrenko as a Federal Security Service (FSB) colonel in a previous propaganda video released in September.
Quick Update: According to some sources Evgeny was 38 yo from Moscow. However earlier today the Russian defence ministry denied any Russian serviceman had been captured and killed by Islamic State in Syria.
"This idiot believed the promises of his state not to abandon him if he was captured," the captive says, referring to himself in third person as he addresses the camera.
“One of my orders was to gain access to Omar al-Shishani or to his circle. But during this I was discovered and arrested by the security services of the caliphate,” he adds, appearing to be speaking under duress.
The captive then calls on the Russian government to withdraw its troops from the war-torn country.
It is thought the captive was held for several months before he was killed late last week. However, it is believed Isil held the video release back until Tuesday to coincide with Victory Day, when Russia celebrates the anniversary of the 1945 victory over Nazi Germany with military parades.
