Many of the poor in Indie still bath in the Ganges and drink from it. Its kind of an all purpose sewer, bathroom and tap. The luckiest people live up river.

Deceased relatives are also thrown into the Ganges River as part of their religious rituals. Many of them are put on floating pyres which are set afire and pushed out into the river. Kind of a final sacrifice to the gods. I believe that helps account for the majority of corpses found in this river which is concurrently used for bathing, washing clothes, washing dishes, and drinking water. Gag.
