The 2019 world champion, Georgian Greco-Roman style wrestler Nugzari Tsurtsumia, was found dead in his home in Khobi, Georgia on 3 July.
According to lelo.ge, it is believed to be a suicide.

Tsurtsumia was one of the brightest stars in the non-Olympic 55 kg category. He won gold at the 2019 World Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, defeating home crowd favourite Khorlan Zhakansha in the final. He also won silver medals at the 2022 and 2023 World Championships and finished second at the 2022 European Championships, losing to Azerbaijan's Eldaniz Azizli on each occasion. He was also a two-time World and three-time European bronze medallist.

Tsurtsumia finished fifth at the 2024 European Championships. His most recent appearance was at the Polyak Imre and Varga Janos Memorial Tournament in Budapest, where he finished third.

Tsurtsumia stood out as one of the most technically skilled wrestlers of his generation and had an implosive wrestling style.

The local press reported that Tsurtsumia had fallen on hard times after his mother and father died within two months of each other in 2023. The wrestler also had financial problems.

The Georgian National Olympic Committee (GNOC) expressed its condolences to the athlete's family, the Georgian Wrestling Federation and the Georgian sporting community.
