A footballer who had spells at Altrincham FC and Huddersfield Town has died after he was assaulted hours before a match.
Jordan Sinnott, 25, on loan at Matlock Town from Alfreton Town, suffered a fractured skull in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Police were first called on Friday night to reports of a brawl outside a car park in Retford, Nottinghamshire.
They were later called to assist ambulance crews attempting to treat Mr Sinnott after he was discovered unconscious around 2am.
Mr Sinnott was taken to hospital where he was placed into a coma.
Matlock Town FC announced his death in a statement on Saturday evening, after their away game against Mickleover Sports was postponed.
