I think it is staged because they would normally blindfold the victim. This is done not so much to calm the victim as it is to reduce the mess. The mucous membranes are excellent conductors because of the high water content, so they tend to heat up rapidly. The eyeballs can pop which tends to be very disturbing for the witnesses. Otherwise, it seem to be an excellent rendition of electrocution.

That is whay they use a leather mask with a hole for the nose to hold the eyes together rather than have them pop.
