1326 metres above sea level yeah it's quite something when you climb there. Bones of the soldiers killed in battle are laid inside a marble sarcophagus at the base of the structure.

Icy dips mark the feast of Epiphany

Bulgarians sing, play bagpipes and chain dance in the icy waters of the Tundzha river during Epiphany, in Kalofer, Bulgaria, Monday, Jan. 6, 2020. Thousands of Orthodox Christian worshippers plunged into the icy waters of rivers and lakes across Bulgaria on Monday to retrieve crucifixes tossed by priests in ceremonies commemorating the baptism of Jesus Christ. In the mountain city of Kalofer, in central Bulgaria, dozens of men dressed in white embroidered shirts waded into the frigid Tundzha River waving national flags and singing folk songs.

Romania's new year bear dancers

T
he Bucovina and Moldova regions in the north-east of Romania are rich in traditions and ancient customs. Lots of towns and villages host winter festivals and parades; one of the biggest is the Festivalul de Datini și Obiceiuri Strămoșești (the festival of customs and ancestors’ customs) in Comănești on 30 December. Different groups come from miles around to participate, and it has become best known for its bear dancers: groups who process through the streets in bear costumes, often made from real animal furs, some as much as 50 years old.

The bear was a sacred animal in ancient Romania. It’s thought that the tradition of dancing bears originated many centuries ago among the Roma who would visit villages just before New Year with real bears on leashes to dance and chase away bad spirits from the outgoing year. When the country was under communist rule, it was banned; bear dancing was made illegal in 1998; and, when Bulgaria and Romania joined the EU in 2007, the last of the dancing bears were bought from their owners and “retired” to a bear reserve in the Rila mountains.

Millions of people in Bulgaria woke up with over a meter of snow after intense blizzard hit the country overnight. Wind speeds were over 20 m/s in many areas for more than 24 hours.

You've had serious snow?! No snow here all winter, and even Moscow seems to be above freezing most days.

Thank you DD. I offer a selection of wildlife photographer of the year competition 2019.

Michel Zoghzoghi, Lebanon

Zoghzoghi was in the Pantanal, Brazil, photographing jaguars. One afternoon, as he was on the Três Irmãos River, a mother and her cub crossed in front of his boat. He watched mesmerised as they left the water holding an anaconda with a very similar pattern to their own

The Surrogate Mother by Martin Buzora, Canada

Elias Mugambi is a ranger at Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in northern Kenya. He often spends weeks away from his family caring for orphaned black rhinos, such as Kitui (pictured). The young rhinos are in the sanctuary as a result of poaching or because their mothers are blind and cannot care for them safely in the wild

And finally the Winner of the competition: Station Squabble by Sam Rowley, UK

Sam discovered the best way to photograph the mice inhabiting London Underground was to lie on the platform and wait. He rarely saw them fight over scraps of food dropped by passengers a few times, possibly because it is so abundant. This squabble seconds before one grabbed a crumb and the pair went their separate ways
