China Concealed Extent of Virus Outbreak, U.S. Intelligence Says

Medical staff wearing protective equipment are pictured removing a patient from the back of an ambulance at St Thomas' Hospital in London, which is at the centre of the UK's coronavirus crisis

China has concealed the extent of the coronavirus outbreak in its country, under-reporting both total cases and deaths it’s suffered from the disease, the U.S. intelligence community concluded in a classified report to the White House, according to three U.S. officials.

The officials asked not to be identified because the report is secret, and they declined to detail its contents. But the thrust, they said, is that China’s public reporting on cases and deaths is intentionally incomplete. Two of the officials said the report concludes that China’s numbers are fake.

Desolate scenes in Sofia, Bulgaria this evening.

This is National theatre usually a lively place in the very centre of the city where even late in the evening there are hundreds of people around but since the SARS pandemic spread from China there are absolutely no people in the streets the country is on full lockdown for two months. And this evening a blizzard swept in adding to the already eerie feeling around the city.

At least 10,003 people have now died after testing positive for coronavirus in Spain, according to Health Ministry data released Thursday.

The grim milestone was passed after 950 new deaths were recorded in the past 24 hours -- the highest single-day increase the country has seen.

However, the 10.5% rise is similar to Wednesday’s increase and smaller in percentage terms than any recorded in the past two weeks.

Spain is one of the world's worst-hit countries, trailing only Italy in total deaths from Covid-19, and behind Italy and the United States in total reported cases.

Summary
  • Nearing a million: The novel coronavirus has infected more than 941,000 people and killed over 47,000 worldwide, according to a Johns Hopkins University tally.
  • Worst-hit: The US has reported more than 216,500 cases, with over 5,100 deaths, according to the university's count. New York City's death toll has passed 1,300. Meanwhile, Spain has recorded over 104,000 cases and 10,000 deaths.

Corpses of SARS victims being uploaded to morgue truck in NYC

New York funeral home and cemetery directors say they are barely coping now with the coronavirus.
Hospitals are calling in mobile morgues to hold extra bodies. Funeral homes are running low on protective gear. Crematories have arranged for “curbside pickup” of human remains. In interviews with funeral home and cemetery directors around the city, workers described an industry on the verge of collapse.

“The death rate is more than the funeral industry can handle,” said Patrick Kearns, of Leo F. Kearns Funeral Home in Queens. “We’re all being completely overwhelmed.”
