Chad Posthumus, a prominent figure in Canadian basketball and a pivotal founding member of the Canadian Elite Basketball League, tragically passed away on Wednesday, 20 November, at the young age of 33. Posthumus, who captained the Winnipeg Sea Bears, suffered from a brain aneurysm during a rigorous training session in Winnipeg on November 9.

Following this unfortunate incident, he faced severe complications from a subsequent corrective surgery that left him in critical condition in the intensive care unit. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Chad could not recover.

This towering six-foot-11 athlete (2m 11cm) grew up in Winnipeg and enjoyed a vibrant career, having played for several teams in the CEBL, including the Saskatchewan Rattlers, Ottawa BlackJacks, Edmonton Stingers, and Brampton Honey Badgers, before returning to represent his hometown team.

Posthumus also broadened his horizons internationally, competing for basketball teams in Argentina and Japan. Notably, he represented Canada on the global stage as part of the 3×3 national team at the 3×3 AmeriCup in 2023, showcasing his talent and passion for the sport.

His untimely death is a significant loss for the basketball community, and he will be remembered for his dedication to the game and the influence he had on aspiring athletes looking to follow in his footsteps.
