An Australian mixed martial artist has died from a rare condition connected to gruelling gym workouts.
Jake Sendler, 21, collapsed during a fight in Melbourne earlier this month, Nine News reported.
His family said Sendler was found to have rhabdomyolysis, which was triggered by severe muscle breakdown.
The rare condition results in the body being flooded with harmful toxins.
Sendler’s family told Nine News that doctors said it was the most severe case of rhabdomyolysis they had ever encountered.
The family said Sendler pushed through as his symptoms got worse while preparing for the bout.
News Corp reported that Sendler was making his fighting debut at the Road to Hex 3 fight night event when he suffered the injury.
He was throwing punches wildly “at the air” towards the end of his fight, according to reporting by Nine News, and after leaving the event his health rapidly deteriorated.
