James Van Der Beek, best known for playing Dawson Leery on Dawson's Creek, has died at 48. His family announced the news in a statement shared on Instagram. In 2024, the actor had revealed that he was battling cancer.

Born on March 8, 1977, in Cheshire, Connecticut, Van Der Beek rose to global fame between 1998 and 2003 as the idealistic, wide-eyed teenager at the center of the cult series, which aired on The WB in the United States and became a defining coming-of-age drama of its era.

Acting alongside Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, and Michelle Williams, he turned Dawson Leery into a generational symbol: sensitive, romantic, and convinced that life could unfold like a film.

When Dawson’s Creek premiered in 1998, Van Der Beek was playing a 15-year-old aspiring filmmaker who approached adolescence with obsessive cinephilia and unwavering belief in grand love. The character’s vulnerability and earnestness helped define the emotional tone of the show, anchoring storylines about friendship, heartbreak, and growing up.

Van Der Beek had begun acting at a young age and moved to New York at 15 to pursue an agent. At 16, he made his stage debut in Edward Albee’s Sand, earning strong reviews from The New York Times. His film debut came with Angus (1995), and he continued balancing theater and university studies until Dawson’s Creek made him a household name.

During and after the series, he moved between film and television, appearing in titles such as Varsity Blues, The Rules of Attraction, CSI: Cyber, Pose, and the comedy Don’t Trust the B---- in Apartment 23, where he played a self-aware, satirical version of himself. His last stage appearance was in 2013, and he returned to the big screen in 2025 with Sidelined 2: Intercepted.

After publicly sharing his cancer diagnosis, Van Der Beek auctioned off memorabilia from his career to help cover medical expenses. The cast of Dawson’s Creek organized a benefit event in New York in his honor.
