An Air Algerie Flight AH 5017 with 116 people on board has crashed in the Sahara desert shortly after asking permission to change course due to bad weather.
50 French citizens were among the 110 passengers and six crew on board Flight AH 5017, all presumed dead.
The French military said it had sent two French fighter jets based in West Africa to try to locate the plane.
This crash is the third major aviation disaster involving a commercial airliner in a one-week span, following the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 on 17 July 2014 and the crash of TransAsia Airways Flight 222 on 23 July 2014.
