A New Rebirth

Scene 1 - Interior, César’s living room - Day

A man in his sixties, César, sits in an old but comfortable armchair in his living room. Sunlight streams through the window, illuminating family photos on the wall. César looks directly at the camera, a mix of nostalgia and serenity on his face.

César:
Hello, good morning. My name is César, and today I’d like to tell you a story… the story that changed my life forever.

The camera slowly pans to a photo on the wall: a younger César surrounded by smiling students.

César (voice-over):
For years, I was a professor at Springfield University. It was a fulfilling life: my students loved me, my colleagues respected me. Everything seemed perfect… until one day, something changed.

Cut to a flashback: César in his study, facing a computer, teaching a Zoom class. Students listen attentively on the screen.

César (voice-over):
I was in the middle of a video call with my students when, suddenly, I felt a sharp pain in my head. Everything blurred, I got dizzy… and then, darkness.

The screen fades to black.

Scene 2 - Interior, hospital room - Day

César opens his eyes slowly. He’s in a hospital bed, surrounded by softly beeping machines. The sterile white light contrasts with his confused expression. A doctor, Dr. Frank, a man in his 40s with a professional yet empathetic air, enters, adjusting his glasses.

César (voice-over):
When I woke up, I was here. And that’s when I met the person who would change everything.

Dr. Frank:
Good morning, César. I’m Dr. Frank. I’ve reviewed your tests, and… I’m afraid the news isn’t encouraging. You had a heart attack. Your heart is very weak, and based on your clinical results, your prognosis isn’t good. You don’t have much time left.

César, still dazed, swallows hard and looks at him with glassy eyes.

César:
Please, doctor, don’t sugarcoat it. Tell me straight… How much time do I have?

Dr. Frank:
About a month, two at most. But with strict care, you might stretch it a bit longer.

César looks down, processing the news. A heavy silence fills the room.

César:
Alright… I’ll make the most of what I have left. I have some loose ends to tie up, I want to leave everything in order. But I’m worried about my wife… and my dog. I don’t want to leave them alone.

Dr. Frank:
Listen, César, there’s a possibility. If we find a compatible donor, you could undergo a transplant. I won’t lie—it comes with risks—but it could give you a chance to live longer and better. Are you interested?

César looks up, a spark of hope in his eyes.

César:
If there’s a chance to improve, to be with my loved ones… yes, doctor, I’m in.

Dr. Frank:
Great. I’ll go over the care you’ll need and the procedure. Now we just wait for a donor.

The camera pulls back slowly as Dr. Frank pulls out a tablet and starts showing something to César.

Scene 3 - Exterior, forest highway - Night

A car drives down a lonely road surrounded by tall trees. Raúl, a young man in his 30s, is behind the wheel, humming a song. The headlights pierce the darkness. Suddenly, his phone buzzes on the passenger seat. Raúl reaches for it with one hand, taking his eyes off the road.

A deer darts across the highway. Raúl reacts too late, swerving sharply. The car veers off the road, tumbling through the trees, and crashes hard against a trunk. Silence falls, broken only by the creaking metal and distant crickets.

Scene 4 - Interior, hospital / César’s house - Day

Dr. Frank is in his office, dialing a number. Cut to César’s living room: a phone vibrates on the table. Shaky hands pick it up. The camera pans up to reveal César, who brings the phone to his ear with anticipation.

Dr. Frank’s voice (on the phone):
César? It’s Dr. Frank. Could you come to the hospital as soon as possible? I have good news.

César manages a faint smile, his eyes shining with hope. The screen fades to white.

Scene 5 - Interior, hospital room - Day

The camera shows César sitting on the bed, a mix of anxiety and hope on his face. Dr. Frank, in a white coat and holding a tablet, stands before him, offering a slight smile.

Dr. Frank:
César, as I told you over the phone, I have good news. We’ve found a compatible donor.

César:
Really, doctor? That’s… incredible. Is it someone young?

Dr. Frank:
Yes, a 30-year-old man. He was in a car accident and has been declared brain-dead.

Scene 6 - Interior, another hospital room - Day

Slow pan to Raúl, hooked up to machines emitting rhythmic beeps. His face is peaceful, but his body lies still. The camera lingers on his chest, rising and falling artificially thanks to the ventilator.

Dr. Frank (voice-over):
In life, he consented to organ donation. Though his brain didn’t survive, his body is in excellent condition. He has no known family; he lived alone and worked as a waiter in a restaurant.

Scene 7 - Interior, César’s hospital room - Day

Back to César and Dr. Frank. César listens intently, processing the information.

César:
I feel sorry for him, but… I know his legacy will live on with me. That noble gesture… I’ll never forget it.

Dr. Frank:
I’m sure he’d be proud to give you this gift. Make the most of this second chance, César.

César:
Yes, I will. With all my heart.

Dr. Frank:
Good. Everything’s ready for the transplant. You know the risks and the care involved. Do you want to proceed?

César:
Yes, doctor. Let’s do it.

Scene 8 - Interior, experimental operating room - Day

A futuristic operating room filled with blinking machines and screens. César and Raúl are on parallel beds, out of frame for now. Dr. Frank, in sterile scrubs, stands at a control panel.

Dr. Frank:
César, everything’s set. Whenever you’re ready, we’ll begin.

César (voice-over):
I’m ready, doctor. I want to wake up and see my wife… to know everything went well.

Dr. Frank:
Science will do its part, but you need to do yours too. Ready?

César (voice-over):
Yes, I am.

Dr. Frank:
Then let’s begin.

Dr. Frank pulls a lever.

Scene 9 - Interior, experimental operating room - Day

The camera reveals an imposing machine with two beds: César and Raúl, both wearing metallic helmets connected by hoses to a glowing orb in the center. Dr. Frank adjusts levers and buttons. The orb hums deeply and starts to glow.

A yellow light flows from César’s helmet to the orb, as if his essence is being drawn out. Seconds later, a blue light travels from the orb to Raúl. The hoses shine brightly. The sound intensifies, building tension.

Suddenly, the yellow light fades. Then the blue. The hum stops. Silence. Dr. Frank exhales, adjusts the panel, and shuts down the machine.

Pan to Raúl’s face. His eyes snap open. A shout: “Oooohh!” The operation is a success: César’s mind now inhabits Raúl’s body.

Scene 10 - Interior, César’s living room - Day

César (in his old body) sits in the armchair, as in the beginning. Sunlight still pours through the window.

César:
And that’s my story. Now I have a new chance at life.

A flash on the screen. The image shifts: now it’s Raúl, but in the same pose and setting as César.

Raúl (César):
In this young body, I’ll live to the fullest. Every day will be like my last, savoring everything life has to offer.

Martha, a woman in her 50s with a warm gaze, enters the frame. She sits beside Raúl (César) and looks at him with love.

Raúl (César):
My wife accepted this new me. I’ll give her all the love and care she deserves. We’ll travel the world, dine at the best restaurants… I won’t waste this second chance.

Martha and Raúl (César) share a tender kiss. The camera pulls back slowly to the window, revealing the outside: a dog plays in the yard.

Zoom out. The screen displays the word: “THE END”.
