Hurricane Michael has been upgraded to an "extremely dangerous" category 4 storm, hours before it is due to make landfall in the Florida Panhandle.

Florida is used to storms but the Panhandle, with its low-lying coastal strip and scattered communities, hasn't seen anything this strong for more than a dozen years.

Thousands of people caught up in the area face frightening next 24 hours as a Category 4 hurricane will most likely level everything in its path including newly build homes from concrete and steel.

Michael has already killed six people in Honduras, four in Nicaragua and three in El Salvador.

More updates soon.

Michael Now Among the Strongest Hurricanes to Ever Make Landfall in the United States

Hurricane Michael, with 155 mph winds at landfall, is the strongest storm to make landfall in the continental U.S. since Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
However, Michael’s pressure (919 millibars) was lower than Hurricane Andrew.
This pressure makes Michael the third lowest pressure ever measured in a US landfalling hurricane behind only the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 and Hurricane Camille in 1969.
A wind gust of 130 mph was reported near Tyndall AFB close to Panama City before the instrument failed.

Whereas our media were telling us about Florence days before it hit, we'd heard nothing about Michael until last night - did it suddenly change course or intensify from something that wasn't considered a serious threat?
And best wishes to all CDG members in its path of course - hope you all survived, and with no major damage to your houses etc.

Hurricane Michael developed from a tropical disturbance in southwestern Caribbean Sea on October 2. Due to global warming it underwent rapid intensification and now ranks as the most intense recorded hurricane to have struck land during the month of October in the North Atlantic basin (inclusive of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean).

Michael is also the third-most intense hurricane to make landfall on the United States, behind the 1935 Labor Day hurricane and Camille, as well as the ninth-strongest landfalling Atlantic hurricane overall.

Thanks Meatpie.

As of three minutes ago:

"Hurricane Michael has been downgraded to a category 3 hurricane and its eye is now approaching southeast Alabama and southwest Georgia.
The storm is moving at 16 mph as of 4pm, according to the National Hurricane Center, and its sustained winds are at 125mph.
Michael is expected to move across southeastern Alabama and southwestern Georgia through Wednesday evening."

Photo Taken From Inside the Eye of Hurricane Michael

The person who took the photo reports that the sun was able to shine through as the eye of the storm passed over and that everything in the area is leveled.

This coverage of Michael by CDG is superior to anything I could find in one place anywhere else! Thank you for supplying the commentary and the videos. I can't understand why those people were even there in that building in Panama City, taping the destruction. More idiotic yet was someone taking a sightseeing drive into the maelstrom, but I'm glad they did...scary stuff, all of it.

Thank you. I think it's short of a miracle that only two people were killed given the ferocity of the storm and the short time people had to prepare.
