I like the idea of having a single knife within reach just outside the fight ring. The wrestler gladiators are unarmed to start, but each guy struggles to get to the knife and have the advantage, while also preventing his opponent from getting hold of it. The guy who gets the knife usually gets the kill, but it's not a foregone conclusion. The unarmed fighter could block the jabs and might even get the weapon from his opponent and claim a victory. It would be a great fight to watch or participate in. Rules require that one man dies, and both men understand when they enter the ring that they must either kill or be killed. To emphasize the point, before the fight starts, a single body bag is laid out beside the ring.

Cool that the fifth pic from the top by Traper shows the guy wearing a caestus, the spiked gloves used in some Roman arena deathfights. Caesti fights usually result in both men will be torn up really bad before it's over.
