Relatives carry the body of Shaher Hanini during his funeral after he was killed in a deadly shootout between policemen and Hamas gunmen in the West Bank town of Qalqilya on May 31, 2009. Six people were killed in the shootout when an attempt to arrest a senior Hamas commander went awry, deepening the rift between the two main Palestinian factions. The gunfight erupted when Palestinian police dominated by Fatah loyal to president Mahmud Abbas tried to arrest Mohammed al-Samman, the commander of Hamas's armed wing in the northern West Bank, who was also on Israel's wanted list.
