COVID-19 Pandemic World Updates

Looting of a Truck in Lagos, Nigeria During COVID-19 Pandemic

New autopsy results from California show there was community spread of COVID-19 in California in January 2020 and possibly as early as December 2019 shortly after the outbreak in China.

Much as I love ‘ The Guardian’ which I read for many years it is fair to say that it can be opinionated and that it is never going to say a good word about the Tory government. And I agree with it that with the benefit of hindsight there are many things Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, has got wrong
But it is equally fair to say that the NHS has not been overwhelmed and hopefully will not be. It seems that the number of people in intensive care is decreasing. The number of new cases is plateauing. Maybe it was by the skin of its teeth, perhaps there may be problems when lockdown is relaxed but I believe the NHS has performed well whatever you may think about the Politicians. And the same applies to most of the Western European health services as well all of which have been under the same pressure.
I’m not sure that the same can be said about the United States but I accept that I have a built in bias against a system based on cash rather than need so I may not be the best judge. And I really dislike Donald Trump!
I hope that Bulgaria and other East European nations performs as well so that you and all your citizens are properly and equally protected; unfortunately whilst BBC T.V has good coverage of our near neighbours and the USA it is less informative about Eastern Europe.
One further point. Of course health personnel are overwhelmed by dying patients, they are human, what do you expect. But that is different from claiming that the NHS itself has been overwhelmed. There will be lessons to be learned world wide but the time for that is when some degree of normality is restored, until then all energies must be focussed on beating the virus.
And finally the U.K. is basically an open society where such matters can be discussed relatively honestly. Today the acting P.M. was subjected to questions in Parliament and the questions and answers were broadcast unedited by the BBC. Now can that be said about all counties and societies.
Sorry for the rant but as you must have gathered I am very proud about my country. It has faults but there is nowhere else I would rather live

Let's forget about the Guardian then for a while. Check this out. This is an excerpt from a Russian newspaper titled "Since when do we have foxes in Moscow?".

According to the article 53 Muscovites claim to have seen a fox wandering freely in the streets of the Russian capital.

There is nothing wrong about being proud with your country I am in no way criticizing you for this or making fun of you. We are just having a discussion.

Your country has given immense benefits to the whole world in science, art, music, TV, movies and entertainment.

I have huge respect for you country.

That being said...

About COVID-19 in Bulgaria I post regular updates on the situation here as well so just follow this thread or ask away.

We have so far 49 deaths all confirmed COVID-19 most with pre-existing conditions but several young guys succumbed to the disease as well.

Italy deaths top 25,000

The number of people who have died with coronavirus in Italy, one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic, has passed 25,000.
Italy's civil protection services on Wednesday reported a further 437 fatalities over the past 24 hours, increasing the overall tally to 25,085.
However, the number of people registered as currently carrying the illness fell to 107,699 from 107,709 on Tuesday, a third consecutive daily decline.
There were 2,384 people in intensive care on Wednesday compared with 2,471 on Tuesday.
Italy's death toll is the second highest in the world after the US.
Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said Italy will announce a plan to gradually exit its lockdown by the end of this week.

Excellent thank you for finding this it is a stunning image definatley once in a lifetime photo.

I agree that there has been insufficient investment in healthcare. That is a political decision taken by the conservatives although to be fair there can never be enough investment to satisfy demand. And no one could reasonably have anticipated the current pandemic and its effect of Western Europe and the USA. You might also argue that Roche can hardly be seen as a disinterested party.
On a personal note. Meat, I never thought you were making fun of me although at times I may probably have deserved that. I enjoy discussion and debate which might explain my profession and I look forward to crossing swords with you and others on site over the next many years. And hopefully the good humour and friendship I have always found in the past will continue.

:cheerswine: Long may CDG reign.

Europe and USA should have banned all international travel as soon as it became clear a SARS-like pneumonia was spreading in China.

Even if pockets remained here and there they would have been much easier to contain.

The first volunteers have been injected with a potential vaccine as part of the Oxford university trial. The odds are against it being successful. More will be vaccinated and it will take a long time for the research to be evaluated but every journey starts with a single step.
Let’s hope. And where Oxford leads others will follow.

Thanks for the update. Where did you hear this? Or read it? According to the BBC the Oxford vaccine for MERS had very good results and even it if works in 80% of people it still be a major breakthrough.

This virus is going to be with us for a long time.

Meanwhile a Siwss study has found that COVID-19 attacks the lining of blood vessels all over the body, which can ultimately lead to multiple organ failure.

It was on the late night BBC news. However the story was expanded a little on the radio today programme this morning with the usual caveat that it’s going to take some time before any trial results are available but that if everything goes well there could be a usable vaccine by autumn. And of course there are many other research projects elsewhere.
One advantage of Oxford is that if they are successful they will not be seeking to profit from their research and the vaccine will be freely available. Unfortunately others will seek to profit and I dread to think what may happen if a commercial company with little conscience is the first to find the vaccine.
I guess it is a case of watch this space.
Incidentally there was also a comment that Gilead seem to have come a cropper with their potential drug which I believe that was designed to reduce the effect of the virus. This is, of course being denied by the Company who blame the testing and still claim to be optimistic.

Electron microscopy of SARS-CoV-2 made by the The State Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology VECTOR.

In March 2020 it was reported that Russian scientists have begun to test vaccine prototypes for the new coronavirus disease, with the plan of presenting the most effective one in June, a laboratory chief at Vector Institute said. The prototypes have been created and the testing on animals began.

Russian autopsy instructions for corpses with COVID-19.

Incidentally I failed to mention the name of Gilead’s drug, Remdesivir. The alleged faulty testing was carried out in China. According to ‘The Times’ The rumours led to a fall in the FTSE 100 stock exchange index although there has been a partial recovery.
And isn’t Donald Trump bonkers with his suggestion that injecting disinfectant is a good idea. Maybe if he really believes in it then he would make a perfect guinea pig for an experiment. After all the first volunteers for the Oxford Project were researchers at the University.

Excellent lindier thanks and well-said. The situation in the USA is very serious more than 47,000 have now died of coronavirus in the US.
