Powerful 6.5 earthquake hits near Samothraki, Greece

A strong earthquake of at least 6.5 on the Richter scale has shaken Greece and parts of Turkey causing panic in parts of Greece and Southern Bulgaria.


It struck off the coast of Greece in the Aegean Sea area at around midday local time (1100 CET.)


The quake was felt in Athens and Istanbul and shook the entire Thrace and Aegean regions.


The U.S. Geological Survey put it at 7.2 on the richter scale although Turkish authorities and the Institute of Geodynamics of Athens reported it as 6.5.


It began 18 kilometres off Greece’s southern coast, close to the island of Samothraki.


The quake lasted approximately 20 to 30 seconds.


There are no reports yet of an injuries or damage to buildings.
