Pederast is a man who performs sodomy on very young men or boys; pedophile used to mean a person who likes children, but has come to mean a person who has an unnatural fondness for children. Pedophiles don't necessarily become pederasts. They might just fondle and relate better with children. Many people believe Michael Jackson was a pedophile but not a pederast, it seems.
This may seem a fine distinction to some. Pedo should always refer to prepubescent children, but again it is often used with people who have sex with anyone under 18 though that is technically incorrect.
