Forecasters predict mudslides caused by heavy rains and life-threatening flash floods across the Leeward Islands, including Puerto Rico and the US and British Virgin Islands.

For the first time in 85 years, Puerto Rico is expected to suffer a direct landfall from a Category 5 hurricane. Puerto Rico's governor has declared a state of emergency ahead of that landfall, which will likely happen Wednesday.

More updates soon.

Hurricane Maria likely to intensify into Category 5 hurricane while hurricane Jose is weakening and tropical storm Lee is expected to dissipate.

The Caribbean island nation of Dominica sustained “mind boggling” damage from Hurricane Maria, its prime minister said Tuesday, after the storm hit with maximum sustained winds of nearly 160 miles per hour that ripped roofs off buildings, including his own home.

There was no immediate word of deaths or injuries on the island from the storm, the third in a string of devastating hurricanes to sweep through the region in recent weeks.

Meanwhile BestGore's owner

This is his last message that was posted yesterday shortly before the storm made landfall.

Puerto Rico is bracing for the most catastrophic storm for a century.

If it keeps on the same trajectory, Maria is set to directly strike Puerto Rico - which escaped the worst of Irma and has been a hub for relief efforts - early on Wednesday.

Hurricane warnings have also been issued for the US and British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, St Kitts, Nevis and Montserrat. A tropical storm warning is also in force for Martinique, Antigua and Barbuda, Saba, St Eustatius, St Maarten, St Lucia and Anguilla.

The US National Hurricane Center said the storm was likely to intensify into Wednesday, noting that its eye had shrunk to a compact 10 miles across and warning: "Maria is developing the dreaded pinhole eye."

That generally means an extremely strong hurricane will get even mightier, said Brian McNoldy, a hurricane researcher at the University of Miami.

  • Hurricane Maria is nearing the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico as a Category 5 hurricane.
  • This could be a catastrophic strike unlike anything seen in these areas since 1928.
  • Heavy rain and high winds are also lashing other Irma-affected areas in the northern Leeward Islands.
  • Hurricane warnings have now been issued for parts of the Dominican Republic.
  • After Hispañola, Maria may then target the Turks and Caicos Friday.
  • It remains too early to determine if Maria will ever threaten the U.S. East Coast next week.

US National Hurricane Center has warned Hurricane Maria could bring an ‘extreme’ threat to life and property with gusts of wind that could reach 155mph.

This only happens in very strong hurricanes and means the storm is likely to intensify further.

I don't know what I'd do if I lived somewhere that Maria is headed. It's so very frightening. I think I might be incapacitated with fear.

It would be a miracle if no one on the island was killed. I hope Mark turns up alive and well.

Hurricane Maria and Hurricane Lee will reach Europe next week

Hurricane Lee is currently a small category 2 hurricane with max sustained winds of 177 km/h at a central pressure of 966mB.

The hurricane moves in a NNE direction and is expected to downgrade to a tropical storm by tomorrow at 8 pm Atlantic standard Time (UTC -4).

Maria is still a category 1 hurricane accompanied by max sustained winds of 120 km/h and a central pressure of 979mB and will be possibly be downgraded soon to a tropical cyclone.

Both storms will reach Western Europe brining gusty winds and torrential rain to the UK, France and Germany.

It's possible that remnants of hurricane Maria will reach Bulgaria as well.

How did they get that far north and still remain functioning hurricanes? Lee is expected to cross the UK on Sunday, last I heard Maria was expected to run up the English Channel on Sunday night, heading in the general direction of Denmark. Weather warnings are in place, but it doesn't really sound like more than a bad-end-of-range normal autumn storm.

Maria is now a weakening tropical storm and in the next few hours is expected to transition into a powerful extratropical cyclone and merge with other systems.

Forecasters expect Lee to continue to weaken further and could dissipate as soon as Saturday.

Meanwhile new tropical waves are drawing attention for potential development around Florida and the Caribbean Sea.
