Thousands of beautiful pine trees that take centuries to grow were burnt along with wildlife in a forest fire that is still raging out of control in Southern Bulgaria near the border with Greece.

Changing weather patterns due to global warming left the area without rain for two months making grass and trees dry and susceptible to fire.

No people were injured but several houses were destroyed.

It will take at least 50 years for the forest to regrow at least partially. Cause of the fire is unknown.

That's a real shame.
Over here, the only native pine forests are in the Scottish Highlands, where touch wood it's never dry enough for long enough for major forest fires to start. Elsewhere in UK all the natural forests are deciduous which don't burn, the major forest fires are all in planted forests of non-native trees so much less damaging environmentally,

Hopefully the fire started naturally, from a lightening strike. Then, at least, we can shake our fists at God. It really is a shame, though, because we lose the air-filtering trees AND we get a shitload of smoke, which is the last thing anyone wants.

That's God for you - can be a right little sod [goes off to check his lightning insurance]

That is so wrong. Shepherds are supposed to be part of a bucolic pastoral scene, walking among their flocks, holding a crooked staff...not a cigarette. They should NOT be smoking, and they certainly should not be starting conflagrations with their butts.
