Several people hit and killed by train in Russia while walking on rail tracks

I don't understand how you can NOT hear a train coming, and get off the tracks. If it were just one person, I'd suspect suicide, but the likelihood of three killing themselves together is close to zero. Perhaps they were all drunk and/or high. That could account for their fatal lack of attention.

It's actually surprisingly easy - modern engines are very quiet, and there's not much track noise with continuous rails. If it was a high-speed train (which this looks like - they were really thrown around) and coming from behind, you'd have to be very alert to hear it in time. I've been on a platform when a 125 has gone through at full speed and it's scary - by the time you spot it you've barely got time to step back behind the 1m safety line.

That IS scary. Stay away from trains...and sharks and bears!
