Temperatures in Novosibirsk, third most populous city in Russia after Moscow and St. Petersburg, have dropped to -30°C (-22 °F) in recent days and schools across Siberia are shutting down for at least a week.

The abnormal weather pattern developed early in November with much warmer air over the North Pole pushing the cold south towards Siberia and Northern Europe.

Some news websites report temperatures of -40°C (-40 °F) furher North.

Perm and Chelyabinsk are also affected by the Siberian high.
