this dude got hacked with like an ax or something for the gashes and wounds to be that big

Those aren't hack marks. They're more congruent to a downward force. Hacking with an axe, probably of standard siz wouldn't cause such clean and massive slices especially in the head. There aren't any bone fragments lodged in the sides of the wounds likely seem in hack marks to the head. The skull would crushed instead cut. Still you would need a considerably amount of force to inflict such damage without pulverizing the section of the skull where the wounds are located. The weapon could still be an axe but it wouldn't have been Hacking motion it would be more of a slashing motion.

Maybe a chainsaw was used.

The cuts aren't jagged enough for a chainsaw. The teeth of chainsaw would have ripped the meat off the body.
