In cases of hanging with complete suspension, areas of postmortem lividity or hypostasis are noticed in the forearms and legs as shown. Engorgement of penile blood vessels result in semi-erection of the penis with a wrong assumption of involvement in sexual activity before death.
In this picture, congestion of the face is due to obstruction of the venous return above the site of the ligature.
Although the body was placed on its back for about 24 hours ( after cutting the ligature ), one can still note clear hypostatic discoloration of the forearms and legs. This denotes two things. First one is that supine position is not the original position of the cadaver at the time of death. Second one is that the body remained suspended for more than 8 hours after death.
