Authorities urged people living near the Calbuco volcano to evacuate after potentially devastating mudflows of volcanic debris were detected in a nearby river, the result of two huge eruptions this week that sent ash across large swaths of southern South America.

Thanks Pie, there are some awesome videos on YouTube

Moment Eruption Begins Caught on Video

A hiker exploring Chile's natural wonders caught the moment Calbuco begins to blow.

He was casually filming a serene forest with gentle waterfalls a short distance away from the foot of the 6,500-foot-high Calbuco volcano.

'There aren't many people here,' the hiker says in Spanish in the video.

'Beautiful, the volcano there...'he says just before the eruption begins.

Incredible he focused the camera seconds before eruption. Major news websites will soon find the video and post but CDG is always first. :no idea:

At least he was at a safe distance and no doubt thinking 'wow, what great footage'.
This guy was presumably 'Oh SHIT' - great footage, but he on the crater rim of Mount Ontake taking 'nice day out' footage last summer, when apropos of nothing it went off.
