Speaking of Matthew Shepard, as terrible as his murder was, the original story the public was told was false, and has since been corrected. It was not simply a random gay-bashing hate crime by homophobic straight boys. It turned out that at least one of the attackers was in a long-term on-and-off sexual relationship with Matthew. He was a self-hating homosexual himself. Somebody wrote a book about the whole sordid mess.
