That blade he was carrying was so long it would have gone in one side of his opponent's body and out the other (if he'd had a chance to use it).

B I G hard sharp metal blade. I suspect it didn't stand a chance against a few small fast metal bullets.
One thing seems for certain: a bullet hurts a LOT less than a blade.
