Lucie Turmel was a cab driver for Taxi Taxi in Banff, Alberta, Canada. On the night of May 17, 1990 she picked up a fare in front of the Banff Springs Hotel. According to a fellow cab driver a guy and two girls got into the cab.
A few hours later the same cab driver spotted Lucie's taxi on the side of the road empty. Later the next morning Lucie's body was found in the middle of a residential street. She was stabbed 35 times in her back and neck. A bloody knife was found in a driveway a few blocks away.
Police took Lucie's taxi to be examined and found fingerprints and blood that did not originate from Lucie on the steering wheel and on the door. A woman called police saying that she recognized the knife. The owner of the knife was Ryan Jason Love. He was brought down to the police station and admitted that he had once owned the knife but didn't know what happened to it.
Undercover police invited Ryan to a party where they watched a few pornographic movies. The undercover officers were hoping that Ryan would basically masturbate and leave them a semen sample for DNA testing. That wasn't the case. A few nights go by and Ryan is once again invited to a party with the undercover officers. This time they were able to get a DNA when Ryan blew his nose on a tissue.
The DNA matched Ryan's and he was arrested. He was convicted of second degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison with parole after twenty years. However after 19 years he was released on parole.
He murdered Lucie for less than $130.
Interesting side note: the investigator in his case lived on the same street that her body was found.
