As someone that was somewhat anti-gay as a kid, I can say it just takes one good friend coming out to change you, if you are any kind of friend and half-way normal. I would say it was never a hate thing though. I always looked at it as kind of funny. Not much better but that's the way I was.
In my early 20's a female beautician had a gay friend who told her I had a nice ass. My reaction was to think, why the fuck isn't the nice ass working on the hot babes? That particular guy is now a long term partner to my closest gay friend. It's really kind of funny that both of those guys, in a kind of redneck town, never had serious trouble. I think part of it is that my friend and his little brother were so talented and had so many friends in high school. Gay or not, messing with those guys would have brought some shit down on you.

Controversy time: I agree with OP. I also think the same thing about most straights, too. And other bisexuals. I guess I'm more charitable towards heteros because straight is cultural default and thus easier to ignore (it doesn't look like a sexual orientation at all, it's just assumed,) and has less weight as a personal attribute beyond "could you do sex things with a person of the opposite biological sex y/n? If yes, okay you're clear, no more questions need be asked." Heterosexuals can be as variant in their behavior as they want, as long as they don't express interest in bonking people of the same sex, and it won't be seen as related to their sexual orientation as much.
Except there are a lot of people who are thoughtlessly, flamboyantly straight and they make me sick. Seeing heterosexual couples performing the traditional romantic roles makes me want to douse them with something viscous, rancid and foul-smelling. Even the cutesy-wutesy hipster "role reversal" she-wears-the-pants, tee hee, makes me want to punch kittens and break bottles of high-proof liquor. (And I love cats. And liquor. Just to give you an idea of how much anger I mean.)
Gay people annoy me for the same root reason--making a huge flipping deal out of who they prefer to fuck, as though it has to have any relation to anything else about them or the way they interact with other people.
I am well aware that this is completely unfair and my douchey opinion is no more than that, but still...annoying and obnoxious, why do human beings even need social identity when we already invented ego death to get rid of it?
