Tokyo (CNN) -- An 8.8-magnitude earthquake hit Japan early Friday, triggering tsunami warnings and sending people fleeing out of buildings in the capital.
The quake rattled buildings and toppled cars off bridges and into waters underneath. In Tokyo, crowds huddled together and tried to reach relatives via cell phone.
Its epicenter was 373 kilometers (231 miles) from Tokyo, the United States Geological Survey said.
It triggered a tsunami warning for various countries, including Japan and Russia, the National Weather Service said.
"Earthquakes of this size are known to generate tsunamis potentially dangerous to coasts outside the source region," it said.

Thanks tromboner and JV.

Major disaster unfolding in Japan, as you know we have dozens of dudes posting on cdg from that area from the world, are thoughts and prayers are with them and we hope they are safe.

Tsunami footage they showed on CNN was unreal and unlike anything I have ever seen before.

Japanese authorities order precautionary evacuation near nuclear plant [Courtesy CNN]
(CNN) -- Workers at a nuclear power plant in north-central Japan are having trouble cooling the reactor and authorities have asked nearby residents to evacuate, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said at a news conference Friday.
The Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant was shut down after the earthquake that hit the country.
"This is a precautionary instruction for people to evacuate. There is no radioactive leakage at this moment outside of the facility," he said. "At this moment there is no danger posed to the environment."
Japan declared a state of atomic power emergency after the earthquake, the Kyodo News agency reported. The government is sending senior officials and a defense force team to the power plant, it said.
Edano said plant workers were having trouble generating sufficient electricity to pump water into the cooling system. They were using all available backup electricity, he said.
"The emergency shutdown has been conducted but the process of cooling down the reaction is currently not going as planned," he said.
Residents living within a 3-kilometer radius of the plant were asked to evacuate, while residents living within a zone 3 to 10 kilometers away were asked to stay inside their homes.
About 2,000 people were affected by the evacuation order, according to the Kyodo News Service.
Edano urged people to remain calm, saying there is plenty of time to evacuate.
The plant was damaged by the 8.9-magnitude earthquake that has caused widespread destruction across the country.

JUST FOUND THIS ON YOUTUBE...

Supermarket staff try to prevent red wine from splashing on the floor as shelves are violently rocked back and forth during one of the biggest earthquakes in recorded history.

the BBC showed live pictures from Tokyo, it's morning in Japan now and sadly cameras showed numerous fires still raging out of control, whole sky filled with thick black smoke.

Horrible scenes.

The US Geological Survery today confirmed that the Japan earthquake had a magnitude 9.0 or more.
