He wrote "LOVE STORY" while a professor at Harvard University. It is about a young couple who meet while attending Harvard...Oliver, the scion of a rich family, and Jenny, a commoner on a scholarship to Harvard.
As this couple falls deeply in love, Oliver's father is enraged that HIS son would "fall" for such a women with NO pedigree and social standing. He scorns his son.
Tragically, Jenny contracts cancer, and dies in a hospital bed in a low quality hospital in Boston, having no health insurance...and Oliver rejected by his millionaire father.
The first"YOU TUBE" link I provide below show the FINAL SCENE from "LOVE STORY" where Oliver confronts his father, right after Jenny has DIED. He then walks out into a park, sits at a skating rink where the two often skated in total joy and bliss...and WEEPS, losing ALL that he EVER HAD.
The other links present the overwhelming, heart-breaking theme from "LOVE STORY"...which won an Academy Award for the BEST MUSICAL SCORE and to this day when played here in the USA many openly WEEP, as Oliver does.
I dedicate this thread to ERIC SEGAL, to his book "LOVE STORY"...and to the heart-rendering theme from the subsequent screenplay "LOVE STORY"....... music composed by Francis Lai and performed by Henry Mancini .
Every time I play this work on my piano, it brings me great sadness and the knowledge that we all will someday die and LOSE ALL that we so cherish.
