In an unprecedented move today, the United States Geological Survery changed the magnitude of the Tohoku earthquake in Japan to magnitude 9, making it one of the most powerful earthquakes on record.

Scientists at the USGS rarely overdramatize in their summaries of big earthquakes and initially just posted a few paragraphs with technical details about the quake.

Today, March 15 they extended their article and called the earthquake "infrequent catastrophe" and admitted they didn't expect such a strong earthquake on that part of the fault.

The level of desolation is on an epic scale with many towns completely destroyed.
